Description

Starting in fall 2025, Prenatal Screening Ontario (PSO) will implement two new publicly funded, non-invasive prenatal tests: Fetal RhD Screening and Alloimmunized Fetal Blood Group Genotyping (Allo-FBGG). These cell-free DNA-based assays enable early, accurate fetal antigen determination in RhD-negative and alloimmunized pregnancies. This allows for more precise RhIG administration and targeted monitoring for hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN), reducing unnecessary interventions and referrals. Tests can be ordered directly by primary care providers, supporting more efficient, patient-centered prenatal care across Ontario.

Objectives:

  • Explain the clinical significance of the new non-invasive fetal blood group genotyping tests and how implementation will enhance and influence current practice.
  • Describe when to order fetal blood group genotyping and understand how precision medicine can help guide more targeted and equitable access to pregnancy care.
  • Identify reliable sources for additional information, guidance, and clinical resources related to the new non-invasive fetal blood group genotyping tests.

SPEAKER:

Vicky Ward (elle/she/her) is a Clinical Content Specialist with Prenatal Screening Ontario (PSO), part of BORN Ontario at CHEO. In this role, she is supporting the implementation of fetal blood group genotyping in Ontario. Once launched, she will provide support to pregnant individuals and health-care providers by offering guidance on available testing options, interpreting results, and outlining next steps. She is committed to advancing prenatal screening, improving patient outcomes, and promoting health equity.

Vicky holds both a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Ottawa. Prior to joining PSO, she spent 25 years in the neonatal intensive care unit at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, where she worked as a registered nurse, transport clinician, and nurse educator. Over the course of her career, she has been actively involved in health-care education and change management initiatives. Vicky lives in Rockland, Ontario, with her husband and three children, and enjoys traveling, martial arts, and puzzling.
