Description

Antibiotic overuse for asymptomatic bacteriuria is common in older adults. Multiple strategies are needed to reduce unnecessary urine culturing and the subsequent cascade that leads to antibiotic use and its associated harms - including drug-resistance and C. difficile. This session will describe the challenge of asymptomatic bacteriuria and present the latest data on best practices in urine culturing. Practical antimicrobial stewardship strategies will be provided, including a new tool called the BLADDER score that can help guide appropriate urine culturing and improve antibiotic use.

Brad Langford is a board certified infectious diseases pharmacist and antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist at Hotel Dieu Shaver Health and Rehabilitation Centre. He is also an Assistant Professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto and Associate Editor for the journal Antimicrobial Stewardship and Healthcare Epidemiology. He has collaborated with various organizations on topics related to appropriate antibiotic use, including the Public Health Agency of Canada, the National Collaborating Centre for Infectious Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Health Organization.  Brad’s work focuses on antibiotic use and resistance surveillance as well as best practices in implementation of antimicrobial stewardship programs.)
