Description

Imposter syndrome, or chronic feelings of self doubt, inadequacy, and fraudulence, is prevalent among nurse practitioners. Imposter syndrome may present at any stage of career, particularly when transitioning to new roles, and has been associated with adverse psychological issues and negative career outcomes. This session explores practical ways to recognize signs of imposter syndrome, cultivate self-assurance, identify professional potential, and thrive as an advanced practice nurse.

SPEAKER:

Dr. Julia Hess is a nurse practitioner currently working as a hospitalist on the inpatient transition care team at Quinte Health. She holds a DNP from Quinnipiac University, where her clinical intervention focused on improving anticoagulation adherence through nurse-created short-form videos.

Additionally, she holds MS and BS degrees in nursing from Downstate Health Sciences University; an MA in higher education administration from Columbia University; and a BA in English from Penn State University. Prior to her role at Quinte Health, she worked as a nurse and nurse practitioner in the oncology setting, including an NP fellowship in pain management and critical care at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Julia became a nurse in her late forties after a 25+-year career in information technology, communications, and academic publishing.

An imposter syndrome expert cultivated through ongoing personal experience, she is passionate about identifying and developing accessible, effective strategies for advanced practice nurses to leverage their strengths, courage, and wisdom throughout their careers.
